Here’s what I can remember, in no particular order: babysitting; housework & cooking (including the necessary shopping); high school teaching (including being a substitute); college teaching; selling housedresses, robes, men’s shirts and “gifts”; winter holiday gift-wrapping; billing, phone and general clerical work for a diaper service; public speaking, performing and leading workshops; studying and doing research; reading the Tarot; administration for a nursery/primary school; counseling, driving, medical and clerical work for an underground abortion clinic; teaching sex education & childbirth/nursing classes; editing a scholarly journal; being an editor/judge for literary magazines, contests and residency selection; editing other writers' manuscripts; mothering; being assistant dean for doctoral studies and administrator for women’s studies at a university; being the founding director of a university center for women and coordinator of a university-wide sexual harassment education initiative; consulting for, appearing in and producing documentary videos; teaching and advising doctoral candidates; organizing and coordinating events; being a nonprofit board member; doing maintenance, delivery and sales as a plant store clerk; managing a small holistic health center (all tasks from bookkeeper to receptionist) …. and writing.
